Cardiff County & Vale of Glamorgan Music Service is based at the Friary Centre in Cardiff. It employs a team of over 130 professional teachers and is responsible for providing:

  • instrumental tuition in Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan schools
  • tuition, resources and facilities for the counties' ensembles which meet at the Friary

Over 11,000 children receive instrumental and vocal lessons in Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan's secondary and primary schools and over 1600 young people are members of the 29 county ensembles:-

6 orchestras, 3 choirs, 8 brass bands, 7 wind ensembles, 2 steel orchestras and 3 percussion groups

The county ensembles exist to give as many pupils as possible the opportunity to play and sing music in a wide variety of styles and in much larger groups than would be viable in schools. Members also have the opportunity to develop the skills required in ensemble playing and are able to take part in concerts at prestigious venues such as St David's Hall.

Many of these ensembles have been very successful in international and national competitions and have undertaken concert tours throughout Western Europe. They have been actively involved in fundraising - the brass bands alone have raised in excess of £100,000 to help those in the community who are disabled and disadvantaged.
